Overview & Learning Objectives

Friday Lecture Overview

In recent years, the armamentarium available to Pediatric Dentists has changed to include robust prevention measure such as SDF, Hall Crown Technique. Despite these innovations, some children will still need pharmacologic behavior guidance in the form of procedural sedation. This course will go through the basics of risk assessment, preventive measures, restorative techniques and finally risk management for procedural sedation.

After attending this lecture, participants should be better able to:

  • Understand how risk assessment is incorporated into a treatment plan
  • How Active Surveillance using preventive techniques can benefit a child behaviorally
  • How SDF, Hall Technique and Bioactive Restoratives can be incorporated into prevention plan
  • How to assess a child airway and systemic health to reduce morbidity and morality

Saturday Workshop Overview

We are in the midst of an evolution of caries management. While sedation regulations, liability questions and options are changing, so too are the armamentarium in our non-pharmacologic tool bag. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), Hall Crown Technique and ever improving bioactive restorative materials contribute to the changing landscape of caries management. This talk will frame how families, children and caries management recommendations are changing and how to adapt our clinical practice to these changes.

After attending this lecture, participants should be better able to:

  • Understand generational differences in family structure and development as it applies to pediatric behavior
  • Understand the science behind recommendations and use of silver diamine fluoride
  • Discuss the concept of active surveillance and Hall crown technique.
