OROFACIAL PAIN CONTINUUM

This continuum is for anyone who wants to better understand TMD and Orofacial Pain, more adeptly diagnose and manage their patients suffering with TMD and Orofacial Pain, and/or discover a successful practice model for treating TMD and Orofacial Pain in general dentistry.

OVERVIEW

This comprehensive program focuses on the structural/functional aspect of TMD and Orofacial Pain but also addresses the neurological, psychological, and general health of the patient. Continuum directors and guest lecturers will discuss therapies and devices used to treat TMD and Orofacial Pain, emerging technologies, and share "tried and true" methodologies. Because many physicians and other health care professionals treat orofacial pain patients, they are encouraged and welcome to attend this continuum.

SPECIALTY DESIGNATION / CERTIFICATION

In May of 2020, the American Dental Association recognized Orofacial Pain as a new specialty. To be certified as a specialist in Orofacial Pain, a dentist must pass both the written and oral exams of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. If you are interested becoming certified, our continuum can help you prepare for you future success.

FOCUS ON FUNCTIONAL/STRUCTURAL ANATOMY

LSU School of Dentistry's Orofacial Pain Continuum is the only one of its kind in the U.S. which combines a comprehensive focus on TMD and Orofacial Pain with renowned guest lecturers that are top in their fields (dentistry, sleep medicine/therapy, physical therapy, etc.), AND dedicates an entire session to anatomy with dissection.

Whether you are driven by a passion to better help your patients or you are working towards a fellowship and need quite a few CE credits, you should consider our Orofacial Pain Continuum. The program is divided into 5 weekend-long sessions over the course of a year. Continuum directors Dr. Dale Ehrlich, Dr. Gary Klasser, Dr. Christopher Spencer, and Dr. Ronald Auvenshine participate in each session along with renowned guest lecturers.

We understand that a progam of this size is a commitment, of both time and expense,
which is why we allow sessions to be "made up" in subsequent continuums and offer a payment plan.

The next step on your educational journey awaits!
If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

"The Orofacial Pain Continuum at LSU gave me confidence to take a proper
history of my patients
and address their concerns. I'm glad it didn't promote any
particular device, philosophy,
or technique based on the science of anatomy
and physiology. The single most useful and
interesting section was the detailed
dissection weekend -
I had forgotten more than I thought since dental school!"

- Steve Carstensen, DDS

"I would recommend the Continuum for everybody, who is trully
interested in the health of patients. I am myself general dentist
with interest in functional problem patients and I would say that not only I,
but my patients certainly benefitted from this continuum.
I have told friends and colleagues, the Dawson Academy
changed the way I view dentistry, LSU's Orofacial Pain Continuum
changed the way I view my patients
."

- Hana Leino Pastrnakova, DDS
