Morning Lecture | AGD #490

The Making of a Miscreant: When Healthy Biofilms Go Rogue
Presented by Purnima Kumar, BDS, MS, PhD

Bacteria have co-evolved with humans, adapting not only to genotypic idiosyncrasies, but also to behavioral and lifestyle changes. Together, the human and the microbiome we host form a 'holobiont', with these organisms playing a vital role in maintaining our physiology and health. Moreover, these dynamic communities form ecosystems within various niches in the human body, and by virtue of this lifestyle, are extremely responsive to shifts in the local environment. Thus, the microbiome acts as a 'canary in the coal mine'. As a periodontist and a microbial ecologist, my research focuses on harnessing the capabilities of the microbiome to promote periodontal health and to act as prognosticators of impending disease states as well as biomarkers of disease activity. For over a decade, our research group has explored the factors that shape this microbiome, with a view to identifying common microbial targets for therapeutic intervention as well as idiosyncratic features within this system.

Afternoon Presentation | AGD #550

Intersections Between Medicine and Dentistry
Presented by Kathleen T. O'Loughlin, DMD, MPH, ADA Executive Director

The aspiration (Quadruple Aim) of U.S. health care stakeholders is to improve patient experience, patient outcomes, and practitioner satisfaction while reducing cost. Patient centered care models are enhanced when there is integration and coordination of all aspects of patient care, including medical, dental, mental and other sources of care that support the achievement of the "quadruple aim". Dr. O'Loughlin will highlight the ADA's efforts to support integration of dentistry with primary care such as the Smiles for Life curriculum, emergency department referral programs, the HPV vaccine, and the opioid crisis. She will also provide an update on ADA initiatives.
