Overview

Dentists who treat children need to be prepared to identify and assess patients who are experiencing a medical emergency. In addition, dentists who treat children must be able to provide immediate treatment until care can be turned over to qualified emergency medical providers. This course will discuss identifying, assessing, and treating medical emergencies in pediatric patients, as well as, medical emergencies that can occur in adults who are in the pediatric dental office. Differences in treatment of medical emergencies between adults and children will be stressed.

Learning Objectives

After the lecture, the attendee will be able to describe and discuss:

  • Describe the provider training needed to treat pediatric medical emergencies
  • Explain how the treatment of pediatric medical emergencies differ from adult medical emergencies
  • Discuss the general concepts of treating pediatric medical emergencies
  • Prepare the dental office to be able to efficiently treat pediatric medical emergencies
  • Take steps to prevent pediatric medical emergencies
  • Understand the signs, symptoms, etiology and treatment of common pediatric medical emergencies

About the Presenter

Michael D. Webb, DDS, MEd is Chair of the Department of pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine. Prior to coming to ECU, he was in private pediatric dental practice in the Richmond, Virginia area. Dr. Webb is a graduate of Northwestern University Dental School and a board-certified pediatric dentist. He completed a certificate in pediatric dentistry from Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and then completed a residency in dental anesthesiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of dental Medicine. In addition to serving as an EMT since 2005, he is a fellow in Anesthesiology of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and a diplomate of both the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.

Clifton O. Dummett, Jr. Memorial Lecture and Workshop

This course is named in memory of Dr. Clifton O. Dummett, Jr., a beloved faculty member in the Pediatric Dentistry Department of LSU School of Dentistry from 1974 to 2006. Dr. Dummett served as Pediatric Dentistry Department head from 2000 until his retirement in 2006 when he was honored with the title Professor Emeritus.
