Overview & Objectives

This lecture will provide attendees with a review of systemic issues and conditions affecting children and a contemporary approach to safe delivery of oral and dental care. Topics to be covered include pediatric hematology/oncology, hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplantation, cardiac defects and antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis, sickle cell disease, and Down syndrome, among others. After the lecture, the attendee will be able to describe and discuss:

  • the etiology and pathophysiology of the systemic issues and conditions presented;
  • how these conditions and their treatment may affect the oral/dental tissues and the craniofacial growth;
  • how these conditions and their treatment affect the safe delivery of dental and oral care;
  • modifications necessary for the safe delivery of dental and oral care for affected patients. 

About the Presenter & Workshop Facilitator

Marcio da Fonseca, DDS, MS is the head of the Pediatric Dentistry department at The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. He is also the director of Oral Health for Special Needs Children and has extensive clinical experience in dental care for medically compromised children and adolescents. His research interests include oral - systemic health connections, dental education, and poverty. He has spent most of his career in academic pediatric dentistry and has published several articles and book chapters, and has co-edited a pediatric dentistry book.

This course will be held at LSU School of Dentistry at 1100 Florida Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana located in the Mid-City area of New Orleans near beautiful City Park and historic Bayou St. John. If you are staying at a downtown hotel in or near the French Quarter, the distance to the dental school is approximately five miles. If you are driving to the dental school, free parking is available in the patient and visitor parking lots located across from the dental school.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is located approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi from both downtown New Orleans and LSU School of Dentistry. Clifton O. Dummett, Jr. Memorial Lecture and Workshop

This course is named in memory of Dr. Clifton O. Dummett, Jr., a beloved faculty member in the Pediatric Dentistry Department of LSU School of Dentistry from 1974 to 2006. Dr. Dummett served as Pediatric Dentistry Department head from 2000 until his retirement in 2006 when he was honored with the title Professor Emeritus.
