Overview & Objectives

This course focuses on the advanced diagnosis and management of orofacial pain, current theory and diagnostic aids used in the differential diagnosis of craniofacial pain, and how differential diagnosis is an extremely challenging aspect of dental practice. This course also includes a discussion on cranial nerve pathology, vascular pain, otalgia, salivary gland pathofunction, neuropathic pain, headaches, burning mouth syndrome, and movement disorders. Other topics covered include the diagnostic confusion that can result from the complexity of neural networks involving the craniocervical area and the number of conditions that share common symptoms with or may mimic odontogenic pain.

After participating in this activity, participants should have an increased understanding toward the complex neurophysiology of pain; the ability to recognize and understand the influence of various headache disorders in the diagnosis and management of the patient encountering orofacial pain; and an increased understanding of the concepts of dysfunctional neuropathic orofacial pain conditions and their various management approaches.
