Overview & Objectives

This course focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis and clinical implications of joint and muscle disorders, and a discussion on occlusion and its relationship to TMD. Other topics include: the use of imaging in TMD diagnosis, the neurophysiology of pain, oral appliance therapy, the role of physical therapy in TMD management, pharmacology for TMD, and Botulinum Toxin therapy.

After participating in this activity, participants should have an increased understanding of the complex neurophysiology of pain; be better able to evaluate a medical history with regards to TMD; have an increased knowledge of the diagnosisand management of the patient encountering orofacial pain.

About the Presenters

Ronald C. Auvenshine, DDS, PhD, Diplomate ABOP earned his DDS from Emory University School of Dentistry and PhD in Human Anatomy from LSU Medical School. Dr. Auvenshine is Founder & Director of the Orofacial Pain Clinic at DeBakey V.A. Hospital in Houston, founding Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial Pain, and visiting professor at LSU School of Dentistry. Steve Bender, DDS, Diplomate ABOP is a clinical associate professor at Texas A&M University, College of Dentistry. Dr. Bender has lectured locally, nationally and internationally on the topics of headache, TMD, facial pains, pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology of the stomatognathic system, and sleep and sleep disorders. He has also served as a consultant for the United States Army.. Charles R. Carlson, PhD, Diplomate ABPP is professor emeritus of psychology and dentistry at the University of Kentucky (UK). He served as director of behavioral medicine and research at UK’s College of Dentistry Orofacial Pain Center. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and holds a diplomate in clinical health psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
Glenn M. Kidder, DDS is an LSU School of Dentistry graduate and assistant clinical professor in the Prosthodontics Department. He is a diplomate with the American Board of Orofacial Pain and a fellow in the following organizations: the Academy of General Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, and the International College of Dentists.   Steve Kraus, PT, OCS, MTC, CCT, CODN specializes in the treatment of TMD and cervical spine disorders. He is an adjunct professor at Emory University’s School of Medicine. He is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. He is also certified in Manual Therapy, Cervical Temporomandibular Therapy, and Orofacial Dry Needling.   

This course also serves as the first session of the five session Orofacial Pain Continuum™. Continuum directors Drs. Ehrlich, Klasser, Spencer, and Auvenshine present and participate in each session throughout the continuum along with renowned guest lecturers. Cancellation & Refund Policy: The Louisiana Academy of Continuing Dental Education, Inc. (d/b/a: LSU Health New Orleans Continuing Dental Education) reserves the right to cancel any course should circumstances warrant such action. If a course is canceled, the Academy will refund the full tuition. If you cancel your registration, the Academy will refund the tuition you paid (minus an administrative cancellation fee). We must receive your written cancellation request no later than July 9, 2021 by mail, fax at (504) 941-8403, or email at CDE@lsuhsc.edu. If LSU Health New Orleans CDE receives notification of your cancellation after the specified deadline, this will result in forfeiture of your entire tuition.
