Overview & Objectives

This is a program for dentists and other healthcare professionals to better recognize, evaluate, diagnose, manage, and refer patients with TMD. Key topics include principles of examination, differential diagnosis, and management of patients; and diagnostic challenges due to the complexity of sensory innervations of the head and neck, the frequency of referred pain in the region, and the uniqueness of each individual.

About the Presenters

Ronald C. Auvenshine, DDS, PhD is the founder and director of the Orofacial Pain Clinic at DeBakey V.A. Hospital in Houston. He lectures nationally and internationally, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the Texas Dental Association.
Dr. Auvenshine is
Past-President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and is a founding member of the American Board of Orofacial Pain.
Charles R. Carlson, PhD, ABPP is a professor of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. He also serves as the director of behavioral medicine and research at the Orofacial Pain Center in the University’s College of Dentistry. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and has been awarded the diplomate in clinical health psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Steve Kraus, PT, OCS, MTC, CCT, CODN specializes in the treatment of TMD and cervical spine disorders. He is an adjunct professor at the Rehabilitation Medicine Department in the Emory University’s School of Medicine. He is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. He is also certified in Manual Therapy, Cervical Temporomandibular Therapy, and Orofacial Dry Needling.


This course also serves as the second session of the five session Orofacial Pain Continuum™. Continuum directors Drs. Gremillion, Ehrlich, Klasser, and Spencer present and participate in courses throughout the continuum along with guest lecturers. The purpose of the LSU Orofacial Pain Continuum™ is to establish a new category of CE for orofacial pain that is more comprehensive than other programs yet can be completed in five weekend sessions in less than a year.

The course will be held at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry located five miles from downtown New Orleans next to historic Bayou St. John and beautify City Park. The dental school is about twenty minutes from downtown New Orleans by taxi.

Please make your own airline and hotel reservations as soon as possible because New Orleans is busy with many events and conventions at this time of year. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is located approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi from both downtown New Orleans and LSU School of Dentistry. For your return flight, please allow about 90 minutes for the trip to the airport and for airline check-in.
