Overview & Objectives

Attendees will participate in an in-depth dissection of the head, neck, and airway over a two-day period. Working in two-member teams, each participant will dissect half of a cadaver head. The head, neck, and airway will be dissected to demonstrate the relationship of structures to orofacial pain conditions including TMD and sleep breathing disorders.
The group will focus on osteology, the oral cavity, the nasal cavity, the digastric triangle, and the temporomandibular joint. 

About the Presenters

Ronald C. Auvenshine, DDS, PhD, Diplomate ABOP earned his DDS from Emory University School of Dentistry and PhD in Human Anatomy from LSU Medical School. Dr. Auvenshine is Founder & Director of the Orofacial Pain Clinic at DeBakey V.A. Hospital in Houston, founding Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial Pain, and visiting professor at LSU School of Dentistry. Dr. Auvenshine has been a contributing member of LSU School of Dentistry’s Orofacial Pain Continuum since its inception. M. Franklin Dolwick, DMD, PhD is a professor and Academy 100 Eminent Scholar for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Dr. Dolwick received his DMD from the University of Kentucky and his PhD and certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia. He was a pioneer in the development of TMJ arthrography and surgical procedures for the treatment of TMJ internal derangement. Dr. Dolwick has published over 100 papers and co-authored four books.


This course also serves as the fifth session of the 2021-2022 Orofacial Pain Continuum™ and the first session of the 2022-2023 Orofacial Pain Continuum™. Continuum directors Drs. Ehrlich, Klasser, Spencer, and Auvenshine present and participate in each session throughout the continuum along with renowned guest lecturers. The course will be held at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry located five miles from downtown New Orleans next to historic Bayou St. John and beautify City Park. The dental school is about twenty minutes from downtown New Orleans by taxi.

Please make your own airline and hotel reservations as soon as possible because New Orleans is busy with many events and conventions at this time of year. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is located approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi from both downtown New Orleans and LSU School of Dentistry. We anticipate the course ending at 12:45 pm on Saturday, so make your airline flight plans accordingly. For your return flight, please allow about 90 minutes for the trip to the airport and for airline check-in.
