This course serves as a review and an update of requirements for the purpose of administering moderate oral sedation and/or IV sedation to adult patients and includes a review of the medications used in oral and IV sedation protocols and pharmacology. The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requires that dentists with a permit to administer moderate sedation to adult patients attend a live, in-person review course once every four years. For dentists licensed in other states, call your state board office to confirm whether this course satisfies their continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this course and thoroughly reviewing the requirements to administer and recover adult patients from moderate oral sedation and/or IV sedation, dentists will be better able to:

  • make a thorough patient assessment before the safe administration of and recovery from moderate sedation
  • monitor their patients and review and know what is required to maintain the standard of care
  • learn and apply the best practices for predictable moderate sedation results by reviewing and learning from oral and IV moderate sedation case studies
  • manage common emergencies during sedations visits
  • administer local anesthesia in sedation
  • sedate medically compromised and special needs patients
  • administer nitrous oxide-oxygen as part of moderate oral and IV sedation
  • administer post-operative pain management as part of practicing sedation dentistry
