Overview

This course serves as an update and review of requirements for the purpose of administering moderate oral sedation and/or IV sedation to adult patients. The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requires that dentists with a permit to administer moderate sedation to adult patients attend a live, in-person review course once every four years. For dentists licensed in other states, call your state board office to confirm whether this course satisfies their continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

This course includes review of the medications used in oral and IV sedation - protocols and pharmacology:

  • Patient assessment for safe moderate sedation
  • Monitoring your patients: whats required, what is needed and review of standard of care
  • Oral and IV moderate sedation case studies: learn best practices for predictable results
  • Management of common emergencies during sedation visits
  • Local anesthesia in sedation
  • Sedating medically compromised & special needs patients
  • Utilizing Nitrous oxide-oxygen in moderate oral and IV Sedation
  • Post-operative pain management in dentistry

About the Presenters

Alfredo R. Arribas, DDS, MS, is an assistant professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Arribas received his DDS from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia School of Dentistry in Lima, Peru and completed the following post-doctoral programs: AEGD certificate from Baltimore College of Dentistry, a two-year GPR certificate from LSU School of Dentistry, a MS in healthcare management from University of New Orleans School of Business, and a four-year oral surgery residency at LSU School of Dentistry. Benjamin R. Record, DDS, a general dentist with a practice in the Baton Rouge area, received his DDS from LSU School of Dentistry. Prior to entering into private practice, Dr. Record served as director of the General Practice Residency Program and assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and Biomaterials at LSU School of Dentistry and as director of a dental clinic in Pineville, Louisiana. He has taught local anesthesia and moderate sedation review and update courses for dentists and hygienists for the past ten years. 

Course Location

This course will be held at LSU School of Dentistry at 1100 Florida Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana located in the Mid-City area of New Orleans near beautiful City Park and historic Bayou St. John. If you are staying at a downtown hotel in or near the French Quarter, the distance to the dental school is approximately five miles. If you are driving to the dental school, free parking is available in the patient and visitor parking lots located across from the dental school.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is located approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi from both downtown New Orleans and LSU School of Dentistry. For your return flight, please allow about 90 minutes for the trip to the airport and for airline check-in.
