Course Overview

This limited-attendance course meets and exceeds the requirements of the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry for a licensed Louisiana dental hygienist to qualify for a special endorsement to administer local anesthesia for dental procedures under the direct on-premises supervision of a licensed Louisiana dentist. Because this course is designed to provide you with personalized attention to learn local anesthesia techniques, there will be plenty of time allocated for you to practice the local anesthesia injections. The course is a good learning experience taught by an experienced course director with injection lab guidance and supervision by experienced members of the LSU School of Dentistry hygiene faculty. The low (6 to 1) student to hygiene faculty ratio in the injection labs facilitates more one-on-one training and learning opportunities. The 20 satisfactory injections required by the Louisiana Dental Practice Act are all administered during the injection labs. After successfully completing this course, the verification of participation document prepared by LSU CDE and a copy of the course syllabus must be submitted to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry for approval. For an application form and requirements to obtain a permit to administer local anesthesia click here. This form can also be found on the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry website under the Forms tab. The permit to administer local anesthesia shall expire with the expiration of your Louisiana dental hygienist's license. There is no requirement to renew your local anesthesia permit; however, LSU CDE periodically offers a local anesthesia update course for licensed dental hygienists. This is a two part program. Part One begins with 8 hours of home-study followed by a self-administered, open-book test. The test will be
e-mailed to you on April 26, 2019, and must be returned by email to the LSU CDE office (info@lsucde.org) no later than Friday, May 10, 2019 (UPDATE: the self-administered materials and open-book test will be returned on May 17, 2019 upon arrival to the course). Before taking the at-home self-administered test and the pre-test at LSU during Session I, each student is required to purchase, read, and study two books. Before taking the at-home self-administered test and the pre-test at LSU during Session I, each student is

required to purchase, read, and study two books: Handbook of Local Anesthesia, 6th Edition by Stanley F. Malamed, DDS and The ADA Practical Guide to Patients with Medical Conditions. Second Edition. All answers to questions on the self-administered test and on the pre-test are found in these two books. It is the student's responsibility to purchase these two textbooks either new or used. These books can be purchased new from the publisher, new or used from Amazon.com or used through Ebay.com. It is recommended that students start reading and studying these books as early as possible before the self-administered test must be returned.
