Learning Objectives

After attending this lecture, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe the relationship between Jaw Development and the occlusion
  • Understand the role of the tongue and swallowing and the dynamics of airway

About the Presenters

Keynote Speaker
Sandra Kahn, DDS, MSD
from University of the Pacific, served on craniofacial teams at UCSF and Stanford. Graduate work in physical anthropology at UC Berkeley, in human craniofacial growth and development. Author of Let's Face it - a guide to your child's optimal health, facial and dental development; GOPex - Good Oral Posture Exercises - Your guide to being healthier, growing stronger and having straighter teethand Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic. Translated Mew's, The Cause and Cure of Malocclusion. Developer of the Khn-Bow, the only bimaxillary protraction device and the Forwardontic Vacuum Activator. A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics practicing Forwardontics exclusively. She is currently coauthoring the books NOse about nasal function and Nitric Oxide with Ehrlich and Rangel; and Biofunctional Breathing with Enelke. Her scientific publications include peer reviewed journals in anthropology, otorhinolaryngology and recently BioScience.

Ronald C. Auvenshine, DDS, PhD, Diplomate ABOP lectures nationally and internationally in the fields of TMD and orofacial pain. He earned his DDS from Emory University School of Dentistry and PhD in Human Anatomy from LSU Medical School. Dr. Auvenshine is Founder & Director of the Orofacial Pain Clinic at DeBakey V.A. Hospital in Houston, adjunct assistant professor at the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, and visiting full-professor at LSU School of Dentistry. He served as President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, was a founding member of the American Board of Orofacial Pain, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of the Texas Dental Association.

Matthew Lark, DDSÂ
Dr. Matthew Lark was and has practiced general dentistry in Toledo, Ohio for the past 27 years with an emphasis on Temporomandibular Disorders. Orofacial Pain, and Implantology. Dr. Lark is a Fellow and current President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.  He is also an assistant clinical professor at the University of Toledo Medical Center, Department of Dentistry and visiting faculty at the University of Michigan Department of Orofacial Pain.  He became a diplomat of the American Board of Orofacial Pain in 1995, is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, and a Clinical Instructor at the Kois Center. Dr. Lark has lectured and published internationally and has been awarded Fellowship in the American and International College of Dentists.  Currently, Dr. Lark is teaching and conducting clinical research using cone beam radiology as a diagnostic aid for implantology, orofacial pain, head and neck pathology, and sleep disorders.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: The Louisiana Academy of Continuing Dental Education, Inc. (d/b/a: LSU Health New Orleans Continuing Dental Education) reserves the right to cancel any course should circumstances warrant such action. If a course is canceled, the Academy will refund the full tuition. If you cancel your registration, the Academy will refund the tuition you paid (minus an administrative cancellation fee). We must receive your written cancellation request no later than February 18, 2022 by mail, fax at (504) 941-8403, or email at CDE@lsuhsc.edu. If LSU Health New Orleans CDE receives notification of your cancellation after the specified deadline, this will result in forfeiture of your entire tuition.

Health & Wellness (Physical Attendance) Policy: By registering for an in-person course, you affirm that you will comply with the safety requirements of the course facility/location with regards to wearing face masks, getting temperature taken, etc. You also affirm that you will NOT attend the course if you have a fever, respiratory/flu-like symptoms and/or if you believe that you have been exposed to COVID-19.
