Objectives and Overview
The 2½-day course plus mock oral board exams are specifically designed to help periodontists prepare for the oral exam (Part II) for certification by the American Board of Periodontology. The course begins with two and a half days of comprehensive literature review and update followed by one and a half days of mock oral board exams.

Oral board exam preparation is more important than ever. For the past five years, the average annual passing rate for the oral exam was lower than the average annual passing rate for the qualifying (written) exam.

The two and a half days of literature review and update cover:

  • Current concepts - particularly as they relate to management of patients with advanced periodontal diseases and dental implant therapy
  • New developments and a general update in periodontics
  • Systemic diseases' influences on periodontal disease, patient management, and periodontal medicine
  • Management of office emergencies and diagnosis of oral lesions

Consider registering for the 2½-day literature review course if you are a practicing periodontist looking for a general update in periodontics.

This course is not approved, recommended, or endorsed by the American Board of Periodontology and thus should not be construed as an official guide in the preparation for any certifying board examination. The statements, ideas, and opinions expressed in this course are those of the individual participants and in no way should reflect the statements, ideas, and opinions of any specialty certifying organization.

The Mock Oral Board Exams

The overall Perio Review Course ends with 1½ days of mock oral board exams. These mock exams simulate as closely as possible the real oral board exams. Each participant appears once before a pair of examiners.

When participants are not taking mock oral exams, they are encouraged to visit the various exam rooms to observe others. This observation process is a key benefit of the overall mock oral board exam process. Periodontists who have passed the oral board exam report that the mock oral board process played a key role in improving their oral test-taking skills and boosting their self-confidence.
